Brief history of the foundation of our monastery
Located in the center of Andalusia and as a concentration of its grace, stands the graceful city of Seville. And adding even more grace, as a gift received from heaven, a foundation of Minim Nuns arose in the 16th century. A convent of Minim Nuns from the Order of Saint Francis of Paola had been founded in Fuentes de León (Badajoz) in 1545, under the title of “Jesus Mary of Help.” However, there they encountered obstacles that led them to decide to seek a more suitable location.
The Minim Fathers, who already had a foundation in Seville, encouraged the Community to request their relocation to Triana, committing to their spiritual care. This is how the foundation of “Our Lady of Consolation” on Pagés del Corro Street took place. However, at that time, the monastery in Triana was very isolated, and there was a lot of humidity due to the proximity of the Guadalquivir River, which even flooded the convent in 1595. For these reasons, it was decided to relocate to Sierpes Street, in the center of Seville.
But the people of Triana had already grown accustomed to their nuns. They rejoiced at the ringing of their bells and hurried to attend their prayers. Even with the generosity that characterizes them, they shared with the Minim Nuns the little they had. So, the neighbors of Triana went to the Provincial Father of the Minims requesting the return of the nuns. The community in Sierpes was very large, and the Mother asked for volunteers to return to Triana. Thus, in 1602, there were two convents of Minim Nuns in Seville, both of which had up to 60 nuns each.
With the vicissitudes of history, only the one in Triana endures, with its patroness “Our Lady of Consolation,” where there have been nuns of great holiness. The community sells handmade sweets and continues to walk with fervor. The neighbors know they can rely on the strength of the prayer and sacrifice of women who gave up everything of theirs in order to live solely for the Lord, praying for everyone.
